Leave the cool porch and find seating elsewhere in the house: a bright front sitting room with a 12 feet wide patio-door and spectacular panoramic view, a quiet cozy evening sitting area in front of the wood burning fireplace and a separate TV room with large plasma flat screen unit and home theatre sound system. The upstairs bedrooms also have quiet corners with chairs and couches.
With five bedrooms (three queen size beds and two doubles + single pull out lazy boy couch) and four bathrooms (two of these en suite), the house will easily accommodate up to 11 people.

Prince Edward Island is one of Canada's most popular vacation and tourist destinations. Tourists from along the Atlantic Seaboard States and Central Canada flock to the beaches, the pure and clean environment, the many championship golf courses and the unique down east cultural experience. PEI is truly a rare find in an increasingly fast paced world. Visitors find a relaxed atmosphere and leave with special memories of a friendly, clean and culturally refreshing vacation. There is an amazing choice of accommodation options available to suit every taste and pocketbook.

The tourism industry is not new to the Island as people have been coming here for the summers for over a century. In various places on the island there are still well maintained summer homes that were built by wealthy industrialists a hundred years ago. Possibly the first tourists were the Miq Maq's themselves. There is evidence they would come cross from the mainland and set up summer camps along some of the shallow and warm bays bordering the Northumberland Strait where there was an abundant supply of food waiting to be picked up at low tide. Summers on the Island can be truly amazing with perfect summer temperatures, there is usually a breeze to keep things from getting uncomfortably hot. And on those days when the temperature gets up into the 80's you are never more that a few miles from a beach or a shady tree where you can cool down. This pleasant climate that just one of the reasons why people keep coming back every year for a whole lifetime. That is one of the best advertisements of all, that tourists keep coming back over and over again.

Time and time again we hear from visitors about how safe they feel when they are on the Island, and how helpful Islanders are in providing everything from directions to helping out when someone experiences trouble of some kind. With the coming of the Confederation Bridge which links mainland New Brunswick to the Island came an increase in the number tourists and Islanders rose to meet the challenge of providing additional accommodations and services for their guests. Many people got into the tourist business for the first time over the ten years. Many are families who built single cottages and beach houses and others built clusters of modern 3 and 4 star properties that can accommodate travelling groups. The new Northumberland Ferry "The Confederation" was added to the Wood Islands - Caribou crossing to add to the holidaying experience for those who wish to experience a short ride by boat over the Northumberland Strait. Many visitors come by the bridge or boat and leave using the other method to add to their PEI vacation experience. Either way you can see the beautiful vacations properties that line the beaches and shoreline.

PEI Beaches

There are over 1000 miles of shore front on Prince Edward Island and beaches abound no matter where you are. It is not unusual to find that your accommodations are either on or within walking distance of miles of sand and surf. Depending on your preference for a vacation spot you can spend time on the North Shore, where you will find the National Park with its white sand beaches, the Cavendish tourist area and the Anne of Green Gables sites. The South Shore is known for its red sand beaches, shallow waters and the warmest water north of the Gulf of Mexico. Eastern PEI has many white sand beaches, and many say that the beaches between Souris and East Point are unmatched in beauty and quality.

PEI Culture

The PEI cultural experience is why many visitors return again and again. You hear it said so often that coming to PEI is like turning the clock back, not because of the absence of modern conveniences but because of the laid back and calm lifestyle, the friendliness and openness of the people and the feeling of security that comes from experiencing the "Island way of life". Most of the permanent residents of PEI can trace their roots back hundreds of years to the waves of Acadian, Scotch and Irish settlers that populated the Island dating back to the 1600's. If your name happens to be MacDonald, Arsenault or Gallant expect to be asked "now would you be a Gallant from Evangeline or Rustico". One of the highlights of any visit to the Island is attending a traditional "Ceilidh" or house party and it's never hard to find one no matter where you are visiting. For a real sense of the music styles you might try the "Orwell Corner Ceilidh", the Irish Benevolent Society Hall, and finish off at Le Village in Mount Carmel. You will find accommodations close to each community.

PEI Golf

If you are a golfer, then PEI is heaven on earth. There are 26 golf courses and they are all over the Island. There is something about the rich red earth that will grow grass and potatoes like no where else. The maritime climate is perfect for growing things and the summers are moderate without the scorching heat and humidity that can be found in Ontario and Quebec or in the New England and East Central States in midsummer. Prince Edward Island is continually rated as having the best value golf vacations in North America by Score magazine and always has courses amongst the highest rated for playing by various golf authorities. And while you're here you might run into LPGA star Lorie Kane or on the Canadian Tour Craig Taylor, after all PEI is a small place. PEI's golf resorts have accommodations close by and you will have a wide selection of cottages, bed and breakfasts, inns, campgrounds, summer homes, motels and hotels that will fit every pocket book.

PEI Horse Racing

The Island tradition of harness racing is alive and well on PEI. Don't be surprised if when you are sightseeing along the back roads that you come across someone jogging their horse along the road side getting it ready for racing at either Charlottetown, Summerside or one of the matinee tracks in the rural communities. Pinette raceway in Belfast is a good example of horse racing purely for the love of it. No wagering, only a bunch of horse lovers getting together for an evening of old fashioned horse racing and cameraderie and swapping of stories. Show up early on any Wednesday night and hang around the barns as the horses are put through their paces. If you like to place a few dollars on the ponies then the place to be is Summerside for the Lobster Carnival and the running of the "Governors Plate" or Charlottetown for Old Home Week and the highly coveted race for the "Gold Cup and Saucer". Both meets feature a full race card both afternoons and evenings for about ten days. The Gold Cup and Saucer is unique in that it is run at 11:58pm on the last Saturday night of the fair. It let's everyone get home and into bed so they will be fresh for going to church on Sunday morning! Book your accommodations early as PEI is a busy place when the races are on.

PEI Activities

If outdoor activities are what you are looking for on a vacation then PEI is the place for you. Golf might be number one, but hiking, biking, kayaking, snorkelling, fishing, windsurfing, bird watching and sightseeing are close behind. The Confederation hiking and biking trail stretches from one end of the Island to the other, and its hard packed surface and grades of 2% or less on the reclaimed railway line makes for great walking or biking. PEI has no wild animals any larger than a few coyotes so it makes for a safe trekking environment. No motorized vehicles are allowed. There are many fine bird watching locations around the island; one of the best is found on the eel grass flat beside the Lord Selkirk Park in Eldon where Blue Herons spend the summer catching shrimp and small fish just off shore. If you carry a pail and shovel watch for locals out digging clams and stop and join in, I am sure they will show you how to "dig a feed of either soft shelled or bar clams". There is an old saying "when the tide is out, the table is set". There are many accommodation possibilities on PEI where you can walk out the front door, onto the beach and come back a half hour later with supper.

PEI Churches

Prince Edward Island has an amazing collection of magnificent rural churches. It is not unusual to find an enormous stone, or brick or wooden church in what seems like the middle of nowhere. Many of these churches date back as much as 200 years ago and are immaculately kept examples of distinct architechural styles. The Catholic Church in Mont Carmel overlooks the Northumberland Strait and its twin spires can be seen for miles. The Indian River Church is made of wood and hosts a summer series of classical music that draws spectators by the hundreds. In Vernon River, St Joachims is perched on top of a hill and dominates the surrounding countryside. There is a unique stone church in Sturgeon and an Anglican Chapel that only seats a few people. There are several Convents, a Bible School, and some old timers still refer to the University of Prince Edward Island as St Dunstans. Low cost accommodations can be obtained at UPEI and is a popular alternative for budget conscious travellers as there is no hostel available on Prince Edward Island. In all there are about 151 churches listed in the PEI phone book, not quite one on every street corner, but just about. Prince Edward Islanders take their religion seriously. In years past on PEI when a Catholic married a Protestant that was what was referred to as "a mixed marriage".

PEI Theatres

PEI Theatre Prince Edward Island is home to the Charlottetown festival and productions of Canadian live theatre that has been performed on the main stage for 40 years.

Enjoy your stay on Prince Edward Island!
